Lenient in java

I never remember what does lenient mean? Hopefully google has the lenient definition ;)
You can find it in java with DateFormat, JXPath for example.

    Hrm, isn't lenient just the name of a variable in DateFormat, not a java keyword?

    I don't think it's a special java keyword...
    That the exact meaning of lenient (as in English language) that I can't remember... (because I'm not English)
